They say you never get a second chance to make a first impression. And when searching for a job, your resume serves as that first impression to your employers. If it is unprofessional, filled with errors, or formatted poorly, you won’t even get the chance to meet a prospective employer and actually make that first impression. Here are some tips for creating a professional resume that will get you noticed and hopefully land you an interview.

Choose the Type of Resume: Reverse Chronological, Functional or Combination

The reverse-chronological resume is the most popular resume. It lists all of your accomplishments, education, and experience in reverse-chronological order, beginning with the most recent and working back from there. Choose this resume when you have consistent employment – no job gaps.

The functional resume showcases skills, they will be the bulk of your resume, followed by employment and education. For example, if you are applying for a position as a journalist, you list the your skills for that position in a special section with subheadings that might include: “Editing” “Investigative Reporting”, “Research”, etc.. Use this resume when your job history is less than stellar and/or you’re seeking a career in a new field.

The combination resume is one that, obviously, combines the features of both reverse-chronological and functional resumes. Within the combination resume, you showcase your skills, as you would in a functional resume, but you also include your prior work history to show that you have no gaps in employment. The combination resumes are good not only for targeted job searches, but also for cross-career moves such as a marketing manager applying to become a marketing professor.

Appropriate Page Length

A resume is as long as it needs to be provided it contains only relevant information for the new job search. Most resumes are one to two pages in length. Don’t try to cram all of your information into a one-page resume to reach an arbitrary page length. If the resume doesn’t look good, it won’t be read.

Tailor Your Resume to the Position

Never send a cookie-cutter, generic resume to numerous employers. Many employers see this as lazy, and figure if you did not put much effort into getting the job, you won’t put much effort into performing the job either.

Never use an objective. An objective is telling the hiring manager what you want. Hiring managers don’t care what you want. They need to know what you can bring to their company. Therefore always use an opening summary called a Qualifications Summary. In it, list a recent, relevant, and quantified accomplishment that will prove to the hiring manager that you’re the correct candidate for the position.

Proofread and Proofread Again

Of course we all know that spelling or grammar mistakes on a resume are an instant turn-off. However, one thing you may overlook is proofreading your names and dates. Be sure everything is reverse-chronological, with no overlap in dates.

With these tips in mind, you can create a resume that makes a good impression and stands out from the competition, leading to an interview with the prospective employer, and then, hopefully, a long and fulfilling career.

Time is a vital resource when you are searching for jobs. It is extremely hard to come by if you are looking for jobs while still working full time and it must be managed wisely if you are unemployed and find yourself with too much time. Organising your time to improve your job searching prospects can be difficult at first, but it should be simple enough once you have developed a habit.

Make a habit of it

This is suitable for those looking for jobs while still working as it focuses on a longer job search that focuses on finding the best jobs. Schedule your job searching on a weekly basis. Don’t try to squeeze searching for jobs into fully packed days. Find the free time you have available, and schedule looking for jobs on a regular basis. If you accidentally miss a search for jobs due to an emergency, wait until the next scheduled job search. Instead of desperately making time to find jobs, know your schedule and do as much as you can to stick by it. Once searching for jobs is habitual, you should find the time you have organised to do it isn’t time you miss as much.

Invest in it

Some people suggest that you should spend as much of your spare money on each aspect of your life as you spend in spare time on that same aspect. This means that if you have a love for cars that takes up 10% of your life, then 10% of your spare money should go towards that passion, such as by contributing to a car loan for a sports car. If this is applied to seeking out jobs, then suddenly extra value is placed on that time. If you spend money on developing your ability to search for jobs, the value of that time increases which may make you prioritise it more. It isn’t necessary to spend very much to achieve this effect, either, as things like resume development do not necessarily cost very much.

Looking for a job has to be one of the most humbling and often exhausting experiences we go through. It is estimated that the average person goes through 5 career changes in a lifetime – not just a job change, but a career change. In addition, the average job search for a professional or manager is three to six months. That is a lot of transition and a lot of time trying to perfect the job search process. So, I have complied what I have learned are the 5 keys to finding the right job for you. Note that this

is a comprehensive program and that addressing only one key is likely to land you either in front of your TV indefinitely or firmly planted in your office chair staring out the window as life slowly passes you by.

Key #1 – Discover your Life Purpose.

Yes, this does sound like a tall order but this is your job we are talking about. Don’t you want to spend your days doing something you love and doing something that fits with who you are? As a career coach, I find that the most fulfilling aspect of my job is coaching people to unite who they are with what they do. When these two forces come together, the results can be astounding. Many people go to work each day wishing they were doing something else, feeling unfulfilled, and feeling as though they are not reaching the level of success they are capable of. All of those feelings can be traced back to the idea of life purpose and the importance of finding a way to fulfill it through your work. The clearer people are about their life purpose, the more likely they are to experience success and fulfillment in their lives.

So the question becomes, how does one discover their life purpose? There are many books and programs that can guide you in the process but for a short exercise Marcia Bench, founder and director of Career Coach Institute, offers 10 clues to discovering your life purpose.

1.	What do you love to do, whether in your spare time or at a work?

2.	What parts of your present job or life activities do you thoroughly enjoy?

3.	What do you naturally do well?

4.	What are your ten greatest successes to date (in your eyes)?

5.	Is there a cause about which you feel passionate?

6.	What are the 10 most important lessons you have learned in your life?

7.	Are there some issues or perceived problems that have occurred over and over again for you?

8.	What do you daydream about doing?

9.	Imagine you are writing your epitaph. What things do you want to be remembered for at the end of your life?

10.	What would you do if you knew you could not fail?

The clues take time to answer and though they may not tell you exactly what you should do in your next job, if you are true to yourself in answering them, it is very likely that you will discover one or two themes emerging and the exercise will provide you with a bit of insight before you take your next career step. This exercise continues on from where many interest inventories leave off. Interest inventories, forced choice assessments where you choose between 2-4 job functions or situational desires, give you possible job options to fit your type. They are decent starting points; but, they often miss one critical factor. What is it you like to do? You may be really good at organizing and you may have a lot of experience doing something but you may absolutely **** it. Doing an exercise such as answering the questions above will give you a much more holistic perspective and it will allow you to get in touch with who you really are and where your passion lies.

Key #2 – Talk to people who are doing it, have done it, or are thinking about doing it.

This has always seemed to me the very best avenue to take when one is contemplating a job or career change but it is perhaps the most underutilized strategy. It is interesting to me that when people are buying a TV or some other major purchase they will shop 10 different stores, talk to everyone who is willing to listen about their pending purchase and solicit information from anyone who even looks like they may own a TV; however, when it comes to switching jobs or changing careers, many people just dive in head first without doing the research and leg work that could ultimately save them from making a big mistake.

If you are thinking about going back to school for a degree in finance because you really like numbers and think you would like to have a job at a bank, find people who have the job you are interested in and talk to them. Ask for an informational interview and learn all you can about what they do on a day to day basis, what kind of education they have, and what their career trajectory has been. Talk to the people in the finance department at your local university and ask them about their students, where students go after graduation, and what a degree in finance may ultimately prepare the students for. Shadow someone who does what you want to do. Spend a day or two as they do their job and pay attention. If you are considering a career change, this is the very least you should do. I am not saying this to deflate any excitement you have about a new career but I am calling attention to the recourses you have available and the fact that just because the grass may look greener, it does not necessarily mean it is. Do the work before you leap so you know what you are getting into. No matter what you do and what change you make, there are surprises that never could have been anticipated or learned beforehand; so; eliminating as much of the guesswork that you can in the beginning, will save you in the end.

Key #3 – Network – Take Advantage of the Unpublished Job Market

Chances are your next job or career change will be found through the unpublished job market. The unpublished job market accounts for approximately 80% of the total jobs filled each year and this percentage is probably even higher when you take strictly career changers into consideration. This is one area that is often the most intimidating for job seekers as it involves the nastiest 10 letter word in the job seeker’s handbook – networking. There are a small percentage of people who like networking but for the majority, this conjures up images of cocktail party schmooze fests where people are passing around business cards like candy and closing every conversation with “call me”. Although this may be part of the networking picture, it is certainly not its whole story.

Networking can be defined as meeting with appropriate people with a specific career focus or in a defined industry to find out more about what they do and perhaps the current needs of their company. So, the goal of networking is to gain information and referrals, not jobs, at least not right away. If you accept the idea that everyone knows at least 50 other people from different parts of their life and that all of those people know 50 people, the possibility that one or several of those individuals will know someone in one of your targeted industries is pretty good. Once you have a referral, draft a letter to the person explaining who referred you and why you are contacting them. Ask if they are available to meet with you briefly so you can learn more about their industry; but, do not ask for a job. Make sure you follow up with a phone call to double your response rate. Then, set up a specific time for the meeting and stick to it. If you are more than an hour away, a phone meeting is appropriate; however, getting in front of the person is generally the most effective type of contact if it can be arranged. When you do meet, the only thing you should bring with you is a list of questions. Do not bring a resume. If one is requested, you can always send it later. Keep the focus of the meeting on gathering information, not on getting a job. Your intention will show through. Finally, do not leave the meeting until you have asked the contact for other people you could talk to. This is the best way to grow your network. Even if that meeting did not go very well, you never know who that person may introduce you to.

Another way to tap the unpublished job market is through targeted letters. These are letters you send to a hiring manager in the company describing your current situation and background and how you could meet the needs of that employer. You should follow up with a phone call approximately 5-7 days after the letter is sent to request an informational interview.

Finally, look for articles or press releases related to new product launches, expansion information, or new offices opening to give you an opening in a targeted letter. A company that is expanding its corporate office may have room for more Human Resource professionals. Write a letter indicating that you learned about this new expansion and what you could offer their organization. Remember to follow up with a phone call and a request for a brief meeting.

The unpublished job market is where most career changers will find their next job. If you have education and experience in a different field, rather than sending off your resume for job postings that list multiple requirements that you don’t have, you are going to have to put greater energy into getting in front of people so they can see how you may fit. This will allow you to sell yourself and your skills and abilities more powerfully. As a career changer you are much more likely to get a job though a referral than by posting your resume on a job board such as monster.com.

Key #4 – Be Selective when using Published Job Market

This is perhaps the job search strategy with which most of us are intimately familiar. You search the paper for help wanted ads, you scour the Internet night and day to find the “best” job boards, and you send out hundreds of resumes and cover letters hoping that someone will choose you out of the pile. Well, although there is a place for some of these search strategies, the truth of the matter is that these methods only account for 20% of the total jobs filled in a given year. This may sound very defeating and perhaps if this is your only strategy I would be worried. But, if you are incorporating all of the other methods as well, you are casting a wide enough net to be confident that something will come soon.

The following are a few tips when working in the published job market.

1.	If you are sending a hard copy of your resume to a company, don’t just send the same resume you have had saved on your computer for months. Make it fit the job for which you are applying.

2.	Remember your resume is not designed to get you the job; it is to get you in the door. Do not include every job you have ever had or every job skill possible. Tailor it to the job and ask yourself whether or not this particular job duty or skill is applicable to the job for which you are applying. If not, leave it out. Your resume is your marketing tool.

3.	When you see an announcement for a job that interests you, tell your fiends that you plan on applying for a job with so and so company and ask them if they know anyone who works for that company with whom you may be able to speak. You are not asking them for a job. You are simply asking them for a contact name. If this fails, call the company and ask for a name. Many times jobs will be listed by the department of human resources in general. Try to get a name to which you can address your cover letter specifically. Also, and this I can tell you worked for me every single time I ever did it, if you hear of a job you really want, craft your cover letter (see #4 below), tailor your resume, and send it priority mail. It does not cost a lot and it may help you stand out in a sea of other submissions. In addition, when you call the company to follow up on the packet you sent (which you absolutely must do) you can refer to this and they may be more likely to pull yours form the pile. They are much more likely to receive priority mail and they are also likely to open it sooner.

4.	When you are writing a cover letter, make it short and sweet. You do not need to give them a litany of everything you have done but rather highlight what you have to offer the company. A great way to do this is to create a standard T letter. In the first paragraph, introduce yourself and tell them how you heard about this job. Then, make a T-bar. On the left side, use words from their ad or posting about what they are looking for in a candidate and on the right side, show them what you have to offer that fits with their requirements. This lets them know you paid attention to the job description, you meet their standards, and you value their time. Remember, a cover letter is not going to get you the job, but it does need to get you in the door.

5.	If you are posting your resume to a job board, make sure that you are resubmitting your resume every 2 weeks. Most recruiters who search job boards rarely go back more than that to look for candidates. It is not ok to submit your resume and then sit back and think you are going to get tons of hits. Job boards may be convenient but you must continue to update, edit, and submit your resume on a regular basis.

Key #5 – Stand Out and Sell Yourself

Looking for a job is hard work and it is often the case that after weeks and maybe even months of searching, job seekers begin to start feeling bad about themselves. They start to question their own value and worth and begin to internalize every rejection letter they get. It may be difficult but this is the time to stand out and to continue to showcase why you are better than anyone else for this job. It comes down to numbers and there are simply too many people vying for one job. Give the hiring manager a reason to hire you over everyone else. If you lack some of the experience, make up for it in personality and ambition. Remember that you will get back what you put out there and if you speak to people with confidence and highlight your strengths and how they will contribute positively to the company, you will get a positive response. You must believe in yourself before you can ever expect anyone else to believe in you.

The final tip I will add is that you never know who you are going to talk to or meet during a job hunt. Someone may overhear you in a coffee shop talking to your friends about a job you want with their company. You may meet a hiring manager who really likes you but who does not consider you a fit for that job; however, that person may know of another job or another company who is hiring and if you really impressed them, they may be willing to pass that information on to you or better yet, make a call on your behalf. The bottom line is looking for a job is a full time job and you should consider everyone with whom you come in contact a potential networking partner. As difficult as it may be to accept, you are marketing yourself and you have to do some really good PR to get a job these days. Those who are willing to put themselves out there and cast their net far and wide are the ones who will get the jobs.

The stakes have been raised in the job search. Employers and recruiters receive a deluge of resumes every day and in response to every job opening. The online resume databases are packed full with tens of thousands and hundreds of thousands of resumes! How will you ensure that your resume will make the cut and that you will capture attention and get the call for an interview? Here are a few crucial tips that are absolutely essential to the creation of a compelling resume in such competitive times.

Tip #1: It isn’t about you, it’s about the employer.

Yes, I know it is a resume and I know that the traditional foundation of a resume is a listing of your employment and educational history. But guess what? Your resume ISN’T about you. Very few of the actual recipients of your resume actually care where you went to school, where you worked ten years ago, and what training classes you completed last year. The simple truth is that the ONLY reason these facts are useful at all are because they give important clues as to the value you have to offer to your next employer. Keep this truth in mind as your write your resume. Yes, you should still include the traditional elements of a resume, but that should be secondary. Your focus and emphasis should be on creating content that is employer-centered and focused on how you have the unique and superior ability to meet their needs and solve their problems. Present your facts within this context.

Tip #2: Employers don’t care about what you know how to do. They care about what you DO with what you know how to do.

Qualifications are the baseline for a position, but they don’t distinguish you from your competitors in the job market, and they certainly don’t sell. On the other hand, achievements do sell, but results sell even better. Just telling the reader that you have achievements and accomplishments isn’t very effective unless you present them in terms of the results and benefits they have produced for past employers. Continually ask yourself “so what?” in terms of your achievement. What did you improve, save, increase, enhance, etc? What impact did the work you do have on the companies? While numbers are always best, even if you are unable to quantify achievements, the emphasis should still be on the results and benefits of your work. For the maximum impact, accomplishments should be presented as concise “success studies” complete with challenge faced, action taken, immediate result, and strategic importance. The reason is simple: what you know how to do (your qualifications, knowledge, and skills) are of absolutely no value unless you know how to put them into practice for the benefit of the organization. Show that you do. Prove impact!

Tip #3: Illustrate passion. Don’t be afraid to show yourself!

Infuse your resume with your personality and your authentic passion. Forget the self-promotion, the cliches, and the jargon. You want to let the facts speak for themselves, but you want to do so in a way that tells the reader about your personality. Yes, the return on investment (ROI) that an employer reaps from hiring you is paramount, but of almost equal importance in the hiring decision will be the chemistry and the fit. Forget the bland, self-effacing, autobiographical style of resume writing that you may have been taught in college. Let your personality and your authentic personal brand shine through, and illustrate your passion for your job target with succinct success stories that demonstrate to the reader your unique value. By doing so, you will attract the right opportunities – the ones for which you are the perfect fit and for which the corporate culture is a perfect fit for you.

Tip #4: Rip your resume in half.

Go ahead. Do it. Print a copy of your resume and then take the first page and rip it in half. Now throw away the bottom half and concentrate on the top half. This is the most important section of your resume. This top half of your resume must be absolutely compelling. It must seize the reader’s attention and draw them in with content that leaves absolutely no doubt that you are the perfect candidate to fulfill their needs and solve their problems. With just a five-second glance at this section, the reader should come away with a crystal clear understanding of your focus and exactly how you would fit in their organization; they must come away with an accurate perception of your brand and the unique promise of value that differentiates you from your peers and competitors. And remember, you must not only tell the reader about your value proposition. You must show them with examples of past accomplishments. I said it before and I’ll say it again. Prove value! Prove impact! In short, within moments of picking up your resume and without looking any further than the beginning of the first page, the recipient of your resume must come away with the perception of a dynamic, result-proven individual. And, of equal importance, of a professional who has clear career direction, and more importantly, who understands the parameters and challenges of the position and exactly how she will add unique value and a superior return on investment in relation to those challenges. It is a tall order, but with clear, succinct, brand-driven and results-focused writing it is absolutely possible to achieve all of these goals.

Before you go about choosing a different career, here are some questions you might want to ask yourself, taking care to answer them as honestly as you can.

First, you need to ask yourself whether you are happy with your current job or not. If you are unhappy, this does not mean you have to do a job change right away. Ask first the reasons why you are not satisfied with your job right now?

Is it because of some other people around you that you do not get along with? If so, the job may just be right for you but it is just the environment that is not.

Go For Fulfilment in Your Dream Job Quest

And then, if you feel dissatisfied because you do not feel fulfilled in your current job, then it really is time to start that job search. It’s vital to assess your career at the start. And then you might find that you are comfortable with your current job, but it is just not paying you enough.

If pay is the issue, maybe it’s time to get radical! You might want to start thinking about venturing away from your comfort zone and take some challenges. Of course, you have to make sure you are going to be prepared to succeed with those challenges.

Because a career change is definitely the right thing to do if you are feeling stuck or even bogged down by your current situation.

The next step is for you to equip yourself to land your dream job.

Your Dream Job Preparations

The first thing you should do is your own, personal job assessment.

- Take a look at different job openings and see if your qualities fit them.

- Make inquiries and see if you would like to do that job.

- You should not only take a job because it has a high pay because eventually you would not be fulfilled by it.

- You should take a job that you can enjoy, a job that can make you grow as a person.

And once you determine the position you want to apply for, it is time to brush up on your skills.

Landing a dream job may take more effort from you than apparent at the start. Remember that the job you are after may also be the dream job of others, which means competition!

So in order to triumph over the competition, the first thing you should do is improve your resume writing skills. As it is your resume that is the first thing to introduce you to your future employers, you had better make an excellent first impression.

Of course it would help if what you can put into your resume weighty evidence showing off your capabilities. But if that is not the case, make sure to write your resume in as focused a way as can be.

Once your resume passes, it is time to hone your interview skills. The interview could make or break it so make sure you do well. There a lot of ways you can improve your interview techniques so make sure to use them.

Once you are accepted for the job, you should harness your networking skills. This way, you would stay in that job – or even better, you can start preparing for your next dream job!

I frequently talk to potential clients who tell me they have been conducting a job search for X months without any success, or that they have sent out X number of resumes with virtually no response. When I press for more details, I hear stories about resumes posted in online resume databases and resumes sent in response to ads found on online job boards.

What is wrong with these job search techniques? Well…nothing is fundamentally wrong with them. In fact, they play an important part – a small part – in most well-constructed job search plans. However, these are extremely low-payoff job search activities, and if these are the only techniques you are using, the chances are far greater than not that your job search will generate disappointing and slow results.

If you are unhappy with the results of your job search, it is time that you took an objective look at your job search techniques. Are you spending too much of your precious time and energy on low-payoff job search activities while you ignore those that will produce the positive results that you want and deserve?

While the more effective job search activities – such as networking -usually require people to step out of their comfort zones, the returns generated by your investment of your time and energy will almost always be worth it.

So, if you find yourself stuck in a stalled, ineffective search for your next job, here are some high-impact tips.

1) Take a hard look at your resume. Like it or not, your resume is your first introduction to most employers, and your only chance to make a good first impression. Effective resumes are focused marketing pieces that are strategically written and designed to sell YOU as THE best solution to a potential employer’s needs. Your resume should be written to illustrate your unique value proposition, with succinct “stories” that differentiate you from your competitors in the job market. Does your resume accomplish these goals? Is it focused effectively? Does it accurately present you in the way that you wish to be presented? If not, it is time to rewrite.

2) Now, take a hard look at your methods. Do the methods you are using in your job search convey professionalism at every step? Is your approach courteous and does it illustrate an understanding of common business protocol? For example, do you always send at least a brief letter of introduction when you send a new contact your resume? I can’t tell you how many times a prospective client tells me he isn’t getting calls on his resume, and when I quiz him he will tell me that he has been sending his resume as an attachment to emails, and then admits that he has not been including an introductory note. In this day and age, when everyone is concerned about viruses and spam, do you honestly believe that a recipient will open an attachment that arrives with a blank email? Of course not! Or…Does the message on your answering machine make you sound like a polished professional or a party animal? Is your email user name a professional-sounding one or a cutesy one? You have tough competition in the job market. Details matter! Courtesy and business protocol matters! Everything you do in your job search should convey an impeccably professional image. My best advice: Apply some basic common sense and remember your manners.

3) Ramp up your networking efforts. Of all of the possible job search methods, networking is the most effective by far, and yet it is the method that the fewest people use. I know that you don’t want to hear this, but no matter how uncomfortable it might be for you, networking is absolutely crucial and is the fastest way to your next position. Remember that when you are networking you are not asking people if they know of an opening or to give you a job, you are just asking for referrals or advice. Would you be upset if someone you knew contacted you to inform you of their job search and asked if you might be able to offer any advice or point her in the right direction? Of course you wouldn’t. In fact, you might even be flattered. This is the same reaction that your personal and professional networking contacts will have. If you don’t have frequent face-to-face contact with your network, the quickest way to jumpstart your search using networking is to send your resume and a brief letter to every single one of your contacts, and then follow up with a phone call a few days later. In most cases, people will be more than happy to help you out. But whether they are able to help you immediately or not, follow up with a brief handwritten thank you card. This is a gesture that will make a lasting positive impression.

4) Do your research; don’t just blindly and indiscriminately send out your resume. Research the geographic and industry areas that interest you and identify the companies and opportunities that seem most promising and intriguing to you. With the vast quantities of information available on the Internet, you really have no excuse not to research thoroughly. Identify the hiring decision-makers and learn all you can about them and their company, their competitors, their challenges, and their future potential. This is a great time to call on your professional network. Who do you know who knows someone who knows some else at the company you are interested in? Once you have an “in” through a referral, it is time to make sure you are absolutely clear on your value proposition. In what way do you feel you could add value to the company? How would hiring you be beneficial? What is the return on investment that the company could expect if they hired you? Once you have the answers to these questions clear in your mind, it is time to approach the targets.

5) Consider a targeted e-mailing of your resume to headhunter/recruiter firms. But don’t just use one of the cheap broadcast services that send your resume out to some unspecified list of 1000s of supposed recruiters. If you are going to do this, use a high-quality service that uses an up-to-date database of recruiting firms that they can break down and segment based on the firms’ specialties. Approaching the distribution of your resume to headhunter firms in this way ensures that the recipients of your resume are individuals who have a sincere interest in learning about you and your credentials. They will try to match you to their current searches, and if you are a fit, you will get a phone call right then. Otherwise, they tend to database your resume to search in relation to future recruitment assignments. Of all the suggestions, this is the most passive and the easiest for you to implement with the least amount of work. But, passive or not, if you are in a profession that is among those often handled by recruiting firms, you should definitely make this a part of your overall job search strategy.

Finally, I can’t stress enough how important it is for you to follow up. Be assertive and approach your job search as if it is a job in itself. Schedule your activities, keep track of the contacts you have made and the resumes you have sent, and follow up regularly and consistently.

Yes, there is no doubt that job searching can be a highly stressful time. But you do have choices about how you will spend your limited time and those choices can have a profound impact on the success of your search. Choose to focus on the high payoff activities and you will find yourself back to work, in the job you want, much faster than you thought was possible.

been in the job market longer than you expected? Are you frustrated because you just don’t see as much progress as you would like and because you feel like success-the perfect new job-is eluding you?

There is no doubt that job searching can be stressful. Not only do you have to cope with what often feels like rejection, if you are currently unemployed, financial concerns may be an added stressor. It may not be much better if you are looking for a new job while currently employed, as you are probably trying to juggle too much to do in too little free time, and may also be worrying that your current employer may learn about your job search prematurely.

No matter how you look at it, job searching is stressful!

But, could your beliefs be making your job search even more stressful than it would be otherwise? Let’s look at a couple of the most common beliefs that many job seekers hold, and that can cause undue stress.

1. Comparing yourself to others.

Did your neighbor Mary land the job of her dreams after searching for just a week? Does cousin Bob brag that he sent out his resume to 20 companies and got calls for 20 interviews in return?

Every single person is unique. The qualifications and credentials they offer, the experiences they bring to the table, the achievements and results they have produced in the past-every job seeker is different. Also, each situation is different. One industry may be expanding while another is contracting. The economy in one geographic area may be booming while another is declining. Certain professions are more in demand than others.

It is simply a mistake to compare your job search to any other…not even to a colleague with very similar qualifications and goals as yours. You can’t compare apples to oranges…you can’t even accurately compare a yellow delicious apple to a red delicious apple.

Instead, be willing to let go of the comparisons and see if instead there is a lesson in the other person’s job search. While the situation is different, perhaps they used a particular technique that you could adapt to your own search. Comparisons almost inevitably cause unnecessary worry and stress and oftentimes blind you to a lesson that might help you along your path.

2. Holding unrealistic expectations

Sure, it is possible that you could send out your resume Friday and have a job offer Monday afternoon. Anything is possible. But it is unlikely.

It is important to recognize that even the AVERAGE job search often takes months. The traditional rule of thumb is to plan for one month of job searching for every $10,000 of salary you are seeking. Whether or not this is accurate, is debatable. But, what is clear is that job searching often takes time. Just taking a moment to think about the hiring cycle will show you this is true: a company may solicit and collect resumes for an opening over a period of weeks, they then spend another couple of weeks interviewing and re-interviewing candidates, then another couple of weeks conducting reference checks and making a decision. It is the rare job search that will conclude successfully in a time that is shorter than even the typical hiring cycle.

Of course, you have no control over these external hiring processes. All you can control are your own actions. So, if you expect your phone to be ringing off the hook for interviews and you just sent your resume out for the first time last week, or if you expect a solid job offer just two weeks into your search, or if you have other goals or hold other expectation that are not realistic, you are just setting yourself up for disappointment and stress.

So, what is the solution to these faulty ways of thinking?

Goal-setting-realistic goal-setting–is absolutely essential. You need to be thinking all the time about your job search and the goals you’ve set for yourself. In this way, you maintain awareness and open yourself to recognize and act on opportunities that arise.

While the ultimate goal, obviously, is to achieve your target job, setting this as the goal that you strive for each day and each week can lead to frustration. The actual timing of when you are offered and accept a job is often based on factors that are outside your control. Thus, setting a goal that you will achieve an offer for your target job in 6 weeks, for example, can just lead to frustration and a loss of motivation when six weeks comes and goes without an offer in sight.

While I certainly encourage you to set a job offer that matches your target as your overall INTENTION, as your actual working goals, I suggest that you select goals related to events and activities involved with searching for your new job. To keep your goals manageable and motivating, I recommend you set weekly goals. It’s important that you write down your goals on paper.

To summarize, your goals should be:

* Attainable while providing a challenge

* Written

* Specific

* Stated in a positive way

* Manageable

* Measurable and trackable

* Timed with a deadline

Job searching may be stressful, but by resetting faulty beliefs and following some basic, proven goal-setting techniques, you can make it much less so.

Review your goals daily to make sure you stay on track and to adjust your schedule if necessary. To keep yourself motivated, always remember to plan a reward for yourself at the end of the week. This could be spending an evening out with friends, giving yourself permission to spend an afternoon in a hammock reading a novel, or buying a new sweater that you really wanted. Whatever it is, make sure it’s something that you enjoy and you will be motivated to work for. It is amazing how successful you will feel-how successful you will know you are-when you begin measuring your success by how much you have accomplished rather than be how much further you have to go!
